A new generator technology transforms waste heat into electricity

A thermoelectric generator (TEG) developed by Evonik makes it possible to turn waste heat from heat generating sources such as vehicle engines to generate electricity. Although the idea of converting waste heat into electricity is not new, currently available thermoelectric generators are rather costly to make.  A new production process for TEG developed by Evonik will help reduce the production costs for such generators by up to 70 percent.

The use of this technology could potentially reduce fuel consumption in the automotive sector by 3-4 percent.  It could also be applied to other energy intensive industries such as steel and aluminum production to reduce their energy consumption.

In 2016, Evonik received the German Sustainability Award for this technology.
